For more than four decades, GM has offered a range of training opportunities to qualified minority auto dealers through its Minority Dealer Development Program. Working under the guidance of the MDAC, Minority Dealer Development staff members have created several successful initiatives over the years, including a mentoring program.
The GM Mentor Program connects minority dealers seeking business guidance with established automotive sellers who voluntarily provide professional support and counseling. Mentors are matched with prospective mentees based on various factors, such as the dealer’s geographic location and the professional strengths and weaknesses of the mentee.
Most mentoring takes place over the phone, although the mentor and mentee occasionally meet face-to-face. Mentors track the progress of their mentees through development reports, which they are required to fill out after each weekly telephone call.
